Transitioning to your natural hair and learning the curly girl method can be over whelming, so I wanted to break it down step-by-step. In this video, I am going through the exact steps you can take to kick off your natural hair journey.
Before we begin, first watch the video on The Curl Girl Method Simplified for Beginners to learn what it means, what ingredients to avoid, and more.
- Go through your hair products and look for any products that contain:
-Sulfates: Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, etc
-Silicones: Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, to name a few
-Alcohols: Ethanol, SD alcohol, alcohol denat, propanol, propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol
Give away or donate products that you no longer plan to use.
- Put away any heat styling tools, including straighteners, curling irons, blow out brushes, etc. Keeping them out of sight and out of mind will help you not be tempted to ruin all your hair work on your journey to healthy hair. I still prefer to blow dry my hair, but only with a diffuser attachmentand I use low heat and low airflow.
- Research & shop for products that are best for your hair type. Use curlsbot.com to copy/paste ingredient lists to ensure products are curly girl method approved. Some drugstore brands are:
Not Your Mother’s (double check ingredients per product)
Cantu Beauty (double check ingredients per product)
- Get a trim! Trimming of those dead, split ends will make a world of difference. More on haircuts for curly hair and signs you need a trim here.
- Clarify to remove silicone buildup. One of the most important steps to begin the CGM. Clarifying will remove product build up and silicones to have a clean slate. More on clarifying methods here.
- Deep condition once per week. Another crucial step that will ensure your hair stays hydrated. Watch this video to learn more about deep conditioning for beginners.
- Buy tools that will help you preserve your style so you don’t have to wash your hair every day, such as a satin bonnet or satin pillowcase.
- Use a t-shirt or cotton Hair Repear Towel (20% off with code glammeup20) instead of a bath towel to prevent frizz and breakage. More about the causes of tangles and breakage here.
- Track your progress. Documenting your hair journey will keep you encouraged and allow you to see what products worked for you and what didn’t. This is something I wish I did more along the way!
- Be PATIENT and consistent. Just like losing weight or eating healthy, it’s a process that will only work if you stay consistent. Follow others who have similar hair on Instagram and YouTube for inspiration.
