Upright Styling vs. Upside Down Styling Curly Hair

Upright Styling Routine vs. Upside Down Styling Curly Hair

Today I’m putting more styling techniques to the test, and comparing my results side-by-side. Many people with curls like styling their hair upside down, because they can work on creating curl clumps while getting great volume. I typically style my curls in the upright position because I can work on perfecting the way my curls will lay and ensure there is not frizz on top.

Upright Styling

Pros
Less shedding
Less tangles
Less breakage
More scalp coverage
More definition at the root
Hair doesn’t fall in your face
Cons
Less volume (without implementing the techniques shown in the video)

Upside Down Styling

Pros
Volume at the root
Larger clumps

Cons
More shedding
More tangles
Separation in the back
Frizzy roots
Stretched out roots
Hair falls in your face

Overall, I had a clear preference in my results and liked how my hair looked better with the upright routine. Honestly, it was hard to come up with any pros with the upside down routine. I can get volume and large clumps even with upright styling by using various techniques that I show in the video.

I think I also didn’t like the upside down routine because I have low density hair so it’s more likely to show scalp. Upright styling allows me to work on placing my curls and situating them to where my scalp is covered. Since my hair is high porosity, the raised cuticle layer causes it to stick to the scalp and the hair’s around it. I also struggle with frizz at the root, so when I style upright I can smooth that frizz and work with my part more.
