Curly Hair Routine for Beginners

Beginner Curly Hair Routine using Drugstore Products, CGM-friendly

Today’s video is another drugstore routine! I really wanted to focus on the basics here, and break down the steps to a routine for beginners. This routine can be used if you’re kicking off your transitioning journey and need a beginner routine to remove silicones that is curly girl method-approved.

I wanted to use the Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk line because I think it’s a great option for beginners because it works for all hair types, is affordable, and has various options for your needs.

Basic Curly Hair Routine Steps

OPTIONAL: Start by dry detangling if you have damaged hair and struggle with breakage. Watch this video to learn how.

  1. Wet hair and apply conditioner to further detangle.
  2. Apply shampoo to the scalp and massage in. Take the time to scrub your scalp to loosen build-up. Apply more water to increase lather. If buildup remains, repeat the shampoo process once more and rinse.
  3. Apply deep conditioner to clean, damp hair. Let sit for 10-20 minutes then rinse with warm water.
  4. Rake in curl cream and/or leave-in conditioner to damp hair (or wet)
  5. Rake/scrunch in mousse or gel
  6. Diffuse until dry or air dry. Watch this video to learn how to diffuse.

  1. Any recommendations for drug store products which aren’t heavily scented. I’m a curly guy and while I appreciate nice smells many of these products are super overwhelming to my nose hole.
