Best Gels for Curls, CGM, Drugstore & High-End

The long-awaited video is finally here! Today, I’m sharing my Top 10 Favorite Gels for Curls, from drugstore to high-end. These are all curly-girl method approved, great for all curl types, and range from strong to medium hold.

I’m very picky when it comes to gel, and have an extensive criteria when I’m testing a gel.

My Criteria for Gels

  • Formula. Does it have slip and is it easy to distribute? Does it work well with both damp and wet styling? How light or heavy is the formula?
  • Hold. I love strong hold because I want my curls to last all week. I also enjoy medium hold but I don’t want the hold to totally disappear after I scrunch out the crunch.
  • Humidity-proof. Does it contain humidity-blocking ingredients? This is a must-have for me in the spring/summer!
  • Definition & clumping. Most all gels provide definition by nature, but does it go the extra mile and aid in curl formation and clumping?
  • Moisture. Does it contain humectants to prevent my curls from feeling dry and brittle? Does it contain film-forming humectants to keep my hair moisturized all week?
  • Longevity. Does it hold up well on next-day hair, and does it refresh easily? I don’t like when gels cause build-up when refreshing or feel too heavy. Added bonus if it can re-activate with just water.
  • Protein. Does it contain strong/large proteins, small proteins, or none? Gels that are heavy in proteins tend to be drying, but when they’re properly balanced with moisture or just contain small proteins they can really tighten your curl pattern and strengthen.

  1. hello my hair before my kids was super curly and full. I had 3a curls now my hair is dead!. lol I have some 2a 2b and some 2c I even have dead straight ones. no matter what I use it doesn’t work and my hair is supper frizzy now also. please help! lol I’ve tried it all
