New NYM Curl Talk Hard Hold Gel & Scalp & Hair Treatment Oil Review

NEW NYM Curl Talk Gel & Oil Review on Low-Density Hair + Day 2-3 Results!

Today I’m reviewing the NEW Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Hard Hold Gel & Treatment Oil. See how I get long-lasting definition, clumps, and volume for low-density 3a curly hair. I also share my next-day results so you can see if they hold up on day 2-3.

Not Your Mother’s just released two new products as part of the Curl Talk line, an affordable line for curly hair products that are sulfate and silicone-free. The original Curl Talk gel was a light hold gel, so I was excited to see that the new gel was strong hold and contains ingredients that help block humidity. They also released a hair oil to help scrunch out the crunch of the gel, which makes the two a great pair.

For this routine, I wanted to focus on curl definition and clumps, while maintaining root volume.

Wash Day Steps

  1. Dry detangle, then shampoo with the Curl Talk Shampoo.
  2. Deep condition for 20 minutes with the Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom masque. Rinse.
  3. Wrap hair in a hair towel to absorb excess water and then spritz any dry pieces.
  4. Apply the Curl Talk Cream all over and comb through.
  5. Section hair and apply a small-medium size amount of the Curl Talk Hard Hold Gel by raking through.
  6. Use a brush to define ringlets and create clumps if desired.
  7. Scrunch all over with a hair towel to absorb excess water and product.
  8. If frizz forms, mix a small amount of gel with water and glaze over the hair.
  9. Diffuse until 100% dry.
  10. Apply oil to palms and scrunch out the crunch and fluff the roots for a softer look.

Day 1 Results

My initial results were super crunchy and hard feeling, which is expected with a hard hold gel. However, I was glad to see that it can be scrunched out while maintaining great hold. I was shocked that I had almost zero halo frizz because I normally have some on top after fluffing. My curls felt soft (although not quite as soft as other products), and I had a lot of shine. The feeling reminds me of when you use a light-hold hairspray, where you can gell you have some product in but it’s not sticky or stiff. I had SO many thick curl clumps that I had to separate which I think was due to both the brush, and the Rice Curl Complex that the Curl Talk line contains.

Next-Day Results

What do you think of my day 2-3 results? I was so impressed! The below photos are without refreshing! I only had to do some minor refreshing in the back with just water and the cast reformed. I love that the gel can be reactivated with water because I don’t want to layer on too much with these products because that can cause a sticky feeling.

Final Thoughts

Check out the video above for my detailed review of the products and final thoughts. I think these are great additions to the Curl Talk line and I loved my results. I think they’re a great option for those that live in humid climates. However, I think they would be too heavy for fine curly hair. My biggest complaints with the Curl Talk Cream and the Hard Hold Gel are that tacky feeling and how hard they are to apply. Because of the polyquat ingredients, you have to clarify in between wash days and avoid layering on too much.
