Nothing is more annoying than when your curls are constantly falling in your face. Especially in the summertime, the last thing we want is our hair in our face when dealing with sweat and humidity. Fortunately, you can tweak your styling routine to keep your hair out of your face. In today’s post, I will be sharing a detailed styling routine that shares techniques for directing your curls out of your face, plus four simple, easy hairstyles that keep your hair back without ruining your curls.
In this routine I’m going to be using products from Umberto Giannini, a UK-based brand with salon-formulated products available at an affordable price. They’re also vegan and cruelty-free. I used their Curl Jelly Shampoo & Conditioner, Banana Butter Leave-in, and Curl Jelly Scrunching Jelly.
There are a few things that can impact the way your curls fall that are hard to control. The way your curls are cut has a big impact. Curly bangs are cut to purposely fall in the face, however, the following tips can still help if you don’t want to wear your bangs “out.”
The way your hair naturally parts also has a major impact in if your hair falls in your face or not.
Washing
Upright washing is ideal compared to washing upside down if possible. When you wash upside down, your hair is going to be pointing straight towards your face and can create more work when styling to direct it back.
Styling
Styling in the upright position is also best for keeping your curls directed back. Apply your products in sections so you have more control of how each curl will lay.
Brush styling can be especially useful for directing the hair back. Pick up horizontal sections at the crown and brush the hair straight up and back. This also helps cover the scalp more and hide any cowlicks. Be sure to brush starting right at the root in order to direct the roots back.
Parting your hair on the side or in the middle can help keep your hair out of your face because it will fall to each side instead of forward. However, if you prefer a “no-part” look, direct all the hair up and back but create a small part in the very front, such as one inch long, so that the face-framing pieces can fall to each side.
When you reach the front section, pay close attention to the “curl families” or groups of curls that naturally clump together when picking up pieces to brush curl.
Also pay close attention to the natural direction that your hair curls. Trying to curl your hair in the opposite direction can cause it to not fall in the right place.
Diffusing
Diffusing gives you more control over how the hair will lay compared to air drying. Diffuse upside down for volume, but be sure to also diffuse some upright to better direct your curls back. I like to flip my hair from side to side, and use the diffuser prongs to lift the roots. The diffuser prongs make it easy to create volume and lift at the root.
You can also use root clips to help set your curls back so they don’t fall in your face as they finish drying and cool off. Root clips can also be used if you’re air-drying to help create root lift.
Fluff your roots once dried, and if the front curls fall towards your face, you can try hooking them around the curls on the side to naturally hold them back.
4 Hairstyles that Keep your Curls out of your Face
There are a few simple hairstyles for a fool-proof way to keep your curls or bangs out of your face. These hairstyles are great for summer, and won’t ruin your curls or stretch them out if you want to wear your curls down the next day.
Mini Claw Clips
- Start with styled, dried hair. Grab a few curls in the front. Pick up individual curls and avoid separating curls to reduce frizz.
- Angle the section back, and then push it slightly forward. This will prevent the curls from stretching out.
- Secure it with a mini claw clip. Repeat on other side if desired.
Headband
- Start with styled, dried hair. Fluff the roots and angle the hair back, reducing the part.
- Place a headband in your hair and gently press it the hair forward.
Satin/silk Scarf
- Start with styled, dried hair. Fluff the roots and angle the hair back, reducing the part.
- Fold a satin or silk scarf into a triangle, then roll it up until you get a long shape.
- Place the scarf in your hair and wrap it around your head like a headband. Tie it underneath.
Half-Up
- Start with styled, dried hair. Grab some curls all along the front section, around the hairline.
- Angle the section of hair back. Press it forward slightly.
- Secure with a mini claw clip, bobby pins, or fun hair clip.
Results / Final Thoughts on Umberto Giannini
Overall I think the Umberto Giannini products are a good option if you’re looking for affordable curly hair products. I loved the Curl Jelly Shampoo and Conditioner. The shampoo lathered very well but didn’t dry ut my curls. The conditioner had great slip and provided moisture.
The Banana Butter Leave-In worked well, and because it’s so thick would recommend using it sparingly unless you have very dry or coarse hair.
The Curl Jelly was the start of the show and provided curl definition and medium hold. It’s a water-based gel and isn’t super moisturizing, so if you find that a lot of gels weigh your hair down this would be a good option. With me having dry hair, I definitely need a leave-in or curl cream underneath it.
My curls held up well on day 2, and by day 3 I did a light refresh by adding more gel and water. By day 4, I was in need of a wash or had to do more of a full refresh by adding more gel.
