Today I’m answering your most-asked questions about styling thin, low-density curly hair for more volume and thickness. We’re covering topics such as covering your scalp, getting more root volume, and achieving thicker-looking ends that don’t appear sparse.
Special thanks to Curlsmith for partnering in this video! They’re having a sale right now on Hair Makeup, where you can get 3 for the price of 2. Curlsmith’s Hair Makeup is a damage-free way of temporarily coloring your hair for a fun Halloween costume, switching up your hair color, or just creating some vibrancy with your natural color. They replace your gel in your styling routine or can be layered with other lighter-hold gels, which is what I’m doing in this video.
The Hair Makeup comes in 5 shades, and I’m going to be using the Gold to add some dimension, highlights, and warmth to my natural ash-brunette hair. If you didn’t already see my Reels using the Copper shade, watch that here.

Watch the video for more in-depth responses to the questions and to see me demonstrate these tips.
1. What are my best tips for very low-density, fine hair?
- Style damp
- Use a light hold gel or a mousse
- Style upright
- Brush hair up and back
- Don’t brush style too much, just the top section
- Microplop
- Diffuse
2. How do I get my ends to look fuller and not be see-through?
- Do not clump the lower section of your hair
- Get a trim, sometimes shorter hair is necessary
- Avoid layers if you have very thin hair
3. What is the most important thing to get consistent results?
- Having healthy hair
- Fully transitioning from damage
- Regularly using:
- A chelating shampoo
- Clarifying shampoo
- Deep conditioning
4. How do I cover my scalp?
- Avoid large clumps with brush styling
- Avoid gel at your roots for less definition
- Use a very dense bristle brush
- Shake out the roots from underneath so the hair isn’t clumped there
5. Any new ideas for styling the crown area when nothing works?
- Pull hair from the middle of your head to the back to cover the scalp (shorten your part)
- Brush over the exposed area in the opposite direction at the very end of your routine
- Use root clips to force the hair to dry together
6. How do I get volume at my roots?
- Lift the hair at the root and scrunch right at the roots
- Use your diffuser prongs to lift and hold the roots up
- Use root clips towards the end of your dry time & hover diffuse
- Use root clips while your hair finishes air drying & “sets”
