How to Tame Dry Frizz

How to Tame Dry Frizz & Moisturize Curls this Winter

Have you noticed your curls have gotten frizzier this winter? Perhaps you live somewhere where the weather is very dry and hot and your curls are frizzy and dehydrated.

In this video, I walk you through a wash day routine for moisturized curls featuring the new Curlsmith Essential Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner.

Difference Between Regular Frizz and Dry Frizz

Frizz is inevitable and impossible to completely eliminate it. If your hair is frizzy because it’s dry, that can be reduced by properly moisturizing it. If your hair is feeling very brittle, rough, and not soft, it’s likely dry. It also can appear dull, lack shine, and not have as much color vibrancy. My hair always looks much lighter in color when it’s dry as you can see in my before and after photos.

Lack of hold can often be mistaken for dryness. If you are not using a styling product like gel or mousse with sufficient hold or that gives you that crunch, then your frizz is likely from that. Curls with fall flat and not hold after wash day if you are not using enough hold.

Wash Day Routine for Dry Frizz

Step 1 (Optional)

Apply an oil such as the Curlsmith Fragrance-Free Shine Oil as a pre-poo treatment. This will help protect fragile hair during the shampoo process. I like to also gently finger detangle with oil on my hands to remove all the loose hairs and knots to prevent it from matting up during shampooing.

If you want to skip this step, I recommend using a conditioner first, before your shampoo, to detangle wet hair.

Step 2

Shampoo with the Curlsmith Essential Moisture Cleanser, which contains gentle surfactants and moisturizing ingredients that effectively cleanse without stripping the hair. It has a great lather too, making shampooing easier. This is a shampoo that can be used on a regular basis.

Step 3

Condition with the Curlsmith Essential Moisture Conditioner or use a deep conditioner of your choice. The new Curlsmith conditioner is very moisturizing without weighing down the hair. It contains Rose of Jericho, Andiroba seed oil, Avocado, Coconut and Sunflower oil, and Shea butter. Using a conditioner is essential to smooth the cuticle back down after shampooing to prevent frizz.

Rinse and wrap your hair loosely in a towel.

Step 4

Moisturize your curls with a leave-in conditioner or a curl cream. I went with the Curlsmith Feather-light Protein Cream to give my hair some protein for proper protein and moisture balance since the rest of this routine is very moisturizing. Protein can actually help your hair retain moisture by filling in the gaps in the hair’s cuticle.

Step 5

Add hold and lock in moisture with a medium to strong hold gel. I went with the Curlsmith Curl Defining Styling Souffle. It contains Irish Moss, a natural styling agent that provides hold and definition, Babassu Oil to moisturize and add shine, Flax Seed extract to help support hair elasticity, and Resurrection flower, known for moisture-retention properties.

Lack of hold is often mistaken for dryness. Look for a gel that has film-forming humectants + oils + holding ingredients. Avoid sticky or gummy gel formulas.

Step 6

Crunch out excess water with a microfiber towel. Diffuse until your hair is completely dry and then scrunch out any unwanted gel cast. For me, diffusing actually helps lock in moisture and keeps my curls from frizzing up as they’re drying.

Step 7 (Optional)

Seal in moisture and add shine by adding a little bit of oil to your hands and smoothing over the surface of your hair

  1. Hi, I love all your videos and have learned so much. I have the same type of hair as you. I wanted to get your take on some products: Miss Jessie’s multi cultural curls, Miss Jessie’s Leave In Condish, Miss Jessie’s Pillow sold curls. Have you tried any of these?
