Styling My Sisters Low Density, Short Curly Hair!

We have a special guest on my channel this week, and that’s my older sister! She so kindly volunteered for me to do her hair for a video and I thought it would be perfect to share how I would style a different hair texture and porosity.

We have a similar curl pattern but it starts further down the shaft, and it’s much healthier than mine. She typically does not do much “styling” and prefers a low-maintenance routine without gel, brush styling, or diffusing. She is a new mom so especially doesn’t have much time for her curls.

We wanted to try out my more in-depth routine to see if it could bring out her curls more for longer-lasting results. It actually saved her time too because she didn’t need to refresh and they lasted almost a week!

Routine Steps:

  1. Start with clean, damp hair. Ensure it’s evenly wet.
  2. Apply a curl cream and comb through to ensure it’s evenly distributed.
  3. Section hair if you’re planning to brush style. Ensure that the section lines are straight.
  4. Brush style by picking up vertical sections, applying some tension by turning the brush slightly, and gently pulling it down the strand. Separate any large curl clumps for more volume.
  5. Scrunch in a strong hold gel and repeat on each section.
  6. Around the crown or any sparse areas, pick up horizontal sections and lift the hair up and back to cover the scalp. Shake out the roots gently to break up clumps at the scalp for more fullness.
  7. Diffuse until the hair is completely dry, or diffuse for 5-10 minutes until the cast forms and finish air drying. Use root clips along the part if desired.
  8. Once dry, shake out the roots from underneath with dry hands, and scrunch out any unwanted gel cast. Leave the cast in for longer-lasting curls.

Final Results

I love how moisturized and defined her curls look. The brush really helped to smooth out frizz and define the curls to their full potential. These results lasted her about 5 days with minimal refreshing!

Products Used:

Let me know if you’d like to see me style more of my family member’s curls, such as my mom’s who has very thick, coarse, 2C hair that is color-treated and she usually wears it straightened.

I hope you enjoyed seeing a different hair type on my channel! I was so much fun and I would love to incorporate it more.
