How has my curly hair changed from eight years ago? Today, I’m recreating my old curly hair routine that I posted on YouTube in 2015. I’m using most of the same products from Aveda, but with my updated techniques to compare the results then versus now. I also include some beginner tips and share how my methods have changed.
Styling Routine Then vs. Now
Then
- After washing, wrap hair in T-shirt.
- Apply a curl cream by glazing it in downwards, and avoiding raking fingers through the hair.
- Let hair air dry for 20-30 minutes.
- Diffuse to finish drying.
- Spray a hairspray to tame surface frizz.
Now
- After washing, wrap hair in a Hair Repear towel. Spritz hair with a water mister to ensure it’s evenly wet.
- Apply a curl cream by raking it in. Comb through to ensure it’s evenly distributed and smoothed out from root to tip.
- Section hair and apply a gel by raking it in.
- Use a brush to define each section. Apply light pressure/tension as your brush through, or use the brush to coil vertical sections. Scrunch.
- Diffuse until the hair is completely dry.
- If frizz forms, touch up areas with a bit of gel.
- Fluff out the roots and scrunch out any unwanted crunch once the hair is 100% dry.
Results
The biggest difference was how elongated my hair was because of the downward motions when applying the products and the lack of styling. I didn’t do any styling techniques such as scrunching, finger coiling, or brush styling.
I applied my products on damp hair, but my hair was not wet enough, resulting in wet frizz. I also did not comb through it and had webbed frizz and tangles within the curls.
I also did not thoroughly apply the cream which resulted in a lot of frizz within the hair and random frizzy patches.
I did not use a gel so my hair was frizzy and did not hold up. I had to layer a hairspray to try and get more hold, which just results in sticky, inflexible hair.
Overall, my routine was very fast and minimal, only 5-10 minutes but it did not hold up long.
Results
My current styling routine results in much more curlier and more defined results. I use more smoothing and curl-enhancing techniques. I rake my products in so they are evenly distributed and use styling techniques such as scrunching, brush styling, and finger coiling.
I still prefer to damp style, but I mist my hair with water after taking it down from my towel so I don’t have wet frizz.
I also use a brush to evenly distribute my curl cream and smooth out any frizz and tangles. I apply my gel in sections for even coverage.
I use a gel now to add hold, definition, and longevity. Without a gel, my hair is very frizzy and does not hold its shape past wash day.
My styling routine is much more involved now, but it prevents frizz, is more defined, and increases the longevity of my curls saving me time in the long run.
