How to Fix Frizz When Refreshing without Water | Curlsmith Shake & Shine Review

Do your curls become frizzy after wash day and you end up having to wet down your hair and completely re-style? In this post, I share how to fix frizz when refreshing using just one product with no added water.

Refresh Routine on Day 2 Hair

Prior to refreshing, my hair has some frizz and undefined curls. Overall the curl shape is still intact and my hair just needs a touchup to extend my style. I slept with my bonnet on and worked out while wearing it too. Then I showered with my hair covered in a shower cap to protect it.

To refresh, I’m using the new Curlsmith Shine & Shine Curl Refreshing Mist. This is a bi-phase product that contains 7 types of hyaluronic acids, seaweed, aloe, and lightweight oils.

  1. First you shake it up to mix up the ingredients, then lightly mist the hair.
    This will rehydrate the hair similarly to how adding water does but even better because hyaluronic acid helps maintain balanced hydration and enhance the smoothness. This does contain some water so there is no need to add more yo your hair.
  2. You can also mist your hands with it and pick up individual curl clumps that are frizzy to spot refresh. The seaweed ingredients help to soften the hair and provide slip. 
  3. Smooth over the strands, removing any tangles or loose hairs. Then finger coil to redefine them and encourage the ringlet to return.
    You’ll notice that the curl definition comes back because this contains ingredients that enhance curl definition and control frizz. 
  4. Because we didn’t soak our hair with water, it will dry really quickly. You only need to air dry with this product because you hair will barely even be damp.

You all know, I rarely air dry even on refresh days. Usually my curls end up stringy and frizzy when I don’t diffuse. This is one of the only refresh products that I can air dry with and my curls stll look good. In total, it only takes me about 3-5 minutes to refresh when doing this routine usually.

The curls appear shiny due to the cranberry seed oil and other extracts. It also has a fruity, citrus, and sweet scent to it that is not overpowering.

I like how it’s not sticky or drying. Usually I don’t use refreshing sprays because they make my hair sticky and often don’t mesh well with the stylers already in my hair from wash day, but I’ve been testing this for a while now with multiple different products and it’s worked great in all routines.

How to Prevent Frizz

The products that I used on wash day are key in preventing frizz from happening in the first place.

I used the Duo Conditioner as a leave-in for some moisture, then used the Shape Up Aqua Gel. This is a lightweight liquidy gel that provides a light to medium hold depending on how much you use.

Strong hold products

Having hold in your hair is key to having longer-lasting curls that aren’t super frizzy on refresh days. That product is still in your hair on day 2, 3, and until your next wash. The stronger hold your gel is, the longer lasting your results will be, especially if you’re dealing with humidity.

One way to test if your gel has enough hold is to scrunch out your cast once it’s dried on wash day, and if it frizzes up immediately then your gel didn’t have enough hold.

Most of the gels from Curlsmith such as the Shine Gel and Fixer give me the longest lasting results and vary in weight and hold level. You don’t have to use a super hard hold gel for long-lasting results either. The Shape Up Aqua Gel has a flexible feel but gives me long-lasting curls.

Styling Techniques

The techniques that you use on wash day also play a big role in how well your curls last. I use a combination of brush styling on wash day and finger coiling. These methods help to smooth frizz and enhance curl clumps.

When your curls are more clumped and not stringy, the frizz will stay tucked away and not get worse after wash day.

Sleep Protection

Another key component is how you sleep with your curls if you want to prevent frizz. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase like the Curlsmith one to prevent frizz and friction at night. I take it one step further and wear a bonnet at night, or you could tie your curls up in a satin scarf or scrunchie.

Why you should avoid soaking with water 

In time, our hair can become weakened by repeated wetting and drying. Avoid fully saturating your curls every day and re-styling. This puts unnecessary stress on the hair’s cuticle and inner workings. 

You will notice more elongated, limp curls and excess frizz. Not to mention it’s time-consuming to restyle every day. 

If you’re doing the right steps that we talked about here, especially properly styling and using strong hold on wash day, you should not need to soak your hair the next day.

Also keep in mind that your hair will last longer as it’s health improves over time. If you’re new to wearing your curls and you’re recovering from heat or color damage, it’s going to take time to fully grow out that damage. Your hair will loose moisture easily and become frizzy when it’s damaged. Be patient and trust the process.
