Do your curls get frizzy, dry, and not last by the end of the day? Achieving both moisture and hold can be challenging. In this routine I show you how using affordable products from Umberto Giannini that are going to be on sale for Black Friday starting Nov 27th.
Step 1: Condition & detangle (optional)
Have you ever shampooed your hair and it just gets super matted and feels awful? Detangling with a conditioner before shampoo may work better for you if you are prone to tangles or breakage. You can use any conditioner you have.
The Curl Repair & Grow Conditioner has ingredients like Coconut Oil which absorb into the hair, protecting the weak areas. It also contains Dimethicone which gives it loads of slip for safe detangling and breakage protection.
I focus it on my ends, working the rest up and gently separating knots and removing the loose hairs.
If your hair is not very tangly or damaged, start with step 2 instead.
Now, we have a smooth base for effective shampooing without tangles in the way.

Step 2: Shampoo
Did you know everything you do before your gel or mousse impacts the hold you get out of your routine?
If you’re using a shampoo that is too rich in moisture and not cleansing enough, your curls may get weighed down and not last.
This is a moisturizing shampoo that creates a rich rather to effective cleanse the hair.
This shampoo contains gentle surfactants but I still find I get a good cleanse. I like to shampoo 2x to make sure I really get my scalp clean.
Both the shampoo and conditioner have ingredients to protect the hair from dryness, breakage, and encourage length retention. It’s sulfate-free and color safe.

If your hair gets overly soft or falls easily, I would go with the Curl Jelly Shampoo & Conditioner, because they are similar but silicone free.

Step 3: Deep condition
When the weather gets colder or when my hair is just feeling extra dry, I like to use a deep conditioning mask about 1-2 times a month. This step replaces regular conditioner.
This is the Thirsty Curls Dehydration SOS Curl Treatment Mask. It’s super rich with Coconut Oil, Cocoa Seed butter, and more nourishing ingredients.
If your hair is super fine and healthy, you probably don’t need much of this and won’t need it very often.
I like to blot out the excess water, then apply it to my hair and brush it through. Scrunch to help with absorption and clip your hair up. Put a shower cap on over top to trap the moisture in and prevent drips.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing. I like to get out of the shower then rinse over the tub once it’s ready.

Make sure you are thoroughly rinsing it out and not leaving conditioner in your hair. I even massage my scalp to make sure it’s all rinsed out. Just like I mentioned previously, too much conditioning under your gel can reduce it’s hold. We still need to moisturize our curls though, especially in the winter, which is why this routine is about getting that balance.
Step 4: Leave-In or Curl Cream (optional)
Next apply a moisturizer such as a leave-in conditioner or curl cream like the Curl Control Cream from Umberto GIannini.
This is another step that can be skipped if you want maximum hold or if your hair is not super dry. I know I’ve been talking a lot lately about using gels on their own to maximize hold, but there are times when I like a cream cream and gel combo. Leave-ins are going to provide lightweight moisture and curl creams are a bit more moisturizing and have styling agents in them to further enhance and clump the curls. This cream is unique in that it’s very lightweight and a thin milky consistency.
If you’re struggling with stringy curls or if your hair gets dry in between wash day, you may need this step under your gel.
This cream contains silicone to condition and soften the hair, and it provides heat protection. No need to use another product for heat protection!

It also has coconut oil for moisture and VP/VA Copolymer which is a holding ingredient. Some creams that contain holding ingredients can actually help to tame frizz in addition to your gel.
When we’re trying to balance moisture and hold, a curl cream with a bit of hold is a great option under your gel for your main holding product.
Step 5: Apply gel in sections
Applying gel is the one of the most critical steps. Curl Jelly is one of my all-time favorite affordable gels. It gives a medium hold, making it great for winter hair routines when you may want a softer look. However it does have humidity-blocking ingredients so it’s great year-round.
The more you apply, the more hold you will get. It’s not too thick and sticky either, so I’m still able to brush it through to ensure every strand is evenly coated. This is key for taming frizz.
If you just scrunch your gel in, you may get more volume but can also get more frizz because it just covers the surface.
It’s also not one of those gels that is drying and going to make your hair feel brittle. I’ve used it by itself and it works great. Using it alone will give maximum hold. Go this route if you have very fine hair or wavy hair that falls easily.

Step 6: Style
You can do simple brush styling by placing the brush under the hair and applying light pressure. That tension is what is going to define the curls and smooth frizz.
My top section is most frizzy and unruly, so I style that a bit more precisely incorporating brush styling and finger coiling.
If you don’t want to use a brush, you can use your hands to create tension by doing the praying hands technique or just finger coiling.
Skipping styling all together may result in a softer, less defined look but not last as long.

Step 7: Microplop + Extra Gel
If your hair takes forever to dry or you find that you can never get a gel cast, try this step.
Take your hair towel, using an area that is still damp, and gently scrunch from the bottom up. Be careful not to rough up the curls too much.
This absorbs the excess water to significantly cut down on dry time.
Then, add some extra gel by glazing it in and gently scrunch. This increase the hold and tames stubborn frizz because the hair is more dry.

Step 8: Diffuse
Diffusing is important if you’re someone who struggles with your curls falling or frizzing up quickly.
This sets the gel cast and freezes the curl shape in whichever position it’s in while drying. I like to gather the hair in the diffuser and press it up towards my scalp. My curls will dry more defined and last longer.
Then, I use the prongs to lift the roots to create volume. Air drying often results a more elongated look and flatter roots.
Diffusing should only take about 10 minutes if your density is similar to mine, but will vary depending on how thick your hair is. You can leave the cast in if you want it to last longer, or scrunch out the cast for a softer look.
With dry hands, reach underneath and shake out the roots. Gently scrunch the lengths until it softens up. You can use an oil at this step too if your curls get really dry or brittle after wash day.

Results
Day 1
I was shocked by how much volume I had while maintaining hold. I think a lot of it is due to the medium hold level of the Curl Jelly allowing for a bit more fullness. The addition of the curl cream gave just enough moisture without weighing it down or reducing my hold. I definitely plan to keep using this combo.
Day 2 – No Refresh
The true test is how products look on day 2, and these did not disappoint! I did not need to refresh and still had great definition and moisture. It softened up further and looked fuller. My hair had some normal frizz, but still looked great overall.
