Before joining, my hair had length discrepancy, damaged ends, flat roots, inability to hold product, overly-moisturized. I felt like I had zero control over what my hair would look like every single day — wash day or not.
I was completely overwhelmed and frustrated. I thought I was pretty educated on curly hair, but I understood my issue to be lack of moisture and hydration so I kept layering on the conditioner hoping it would help. I was then completely embarrassed about my hair. I never knew how each wash day would turn out. I have a cabinet full of products and nothing seemed to work. Or something would work temporarily and then it would stop. I was inundated with information and still felt like I knew nothing.
I have a MUCH better understanding of why my hair behaves the way it does, how to manage it with varying climates and temperatures (particularly humidity!) I feel like I’m more in control of how my hair behaves and will turn out on wash day vs. the other way around. I know what my hair needs when it behaves a certain way, how to manage “unruly” curls, and how to troubleshoot. I have way more confidence than I ever did before!
I now feel like I’m capable of troubleshooting an issue. I don’t automatically have to default to a hat or ponytail. I thought I knew a lot about which products worked for my hair before, but I have learned so much more than I ever thought. Gena has gone above and beyond in truly educating me and helping me understand the nuances of curly hair, how products work differently on different curl types, what MY hair needs and how it will respond. It has been life-changing!
I truly can’t find appropriate words to express how supportive, understood, and connected I feel to the group and Gena. I’ve worked with several coaches in the past and Gena’s level of responsiveness, empathy, clarifications, patience, time, and understanding is like nothing I have ever experienced before. If it ever felt overwhelming she reminded us of exactly what to focus on. She breaks things down in a meaningful, structured way so that I really didn’t feel overwhelmed, which has not been the case in the past (for me).
DO IT! Don’t hesitate. Even if you think you know a lot about curly hair and even if you DO know a lot about curly hair and have a better understanding, I guarantee Gena will teach you more. Not only that, but there is nothing but positives you can take away from learning from Gena and others in the community. I’ve learned from Gena but I’ve also learned from the others. I don’t have many “in real life” friends who have curly hair, so there’s an added bonus of connecting with others who appreciate the science of curls. There are many individuals of all ages, hair types, lengths, curls, textures, etc. It is absolutely 100% worth the investment. I have zero doubt I’m going to continue.
