This is very common with silkier hair types.

When your hair is healthy and smooth, the strands stick together easily. That gives you soft, defined clumps but it also prevents curl stacking, which is what creates fullness at the root.

To increase volume, you need a little friction, so the hairs don’t cling together so tightly.

That can come from:
• Light layering in your haircut
• Or targeted texture and grit at the roots

Even a small mist of dry shampoo or texture spray at the root can create enough separation to help the hair lift and stay lifted, almost like gentle teasing without the damage.

It’s always a balance between softness and structure. More softness creates smoother clumps. More friction creates more fullness.

Why Soft, Silky Hair Falls Flat

Full video is on my channel where I walk through all the reasons your curls may have stopped curling — and how to troubleshoot them step-by-step.

A lot of people panic and assume their curl pattern is gone, but most of the time, your curls are responding to changes in structure, hold, styling, or routine balance.

This is the same process I walk new coaching clients through:
• Start with a reset wash day: clarify, bond-build, then shampoo and condition
• Build a wash day rotation: treatment wash days alternating with regular wash days so your hair stays balanced over time
• Use stylers with enough hold and structure for your hair type — especially if you have waves or loose curls that get weighed down easily
• Finish with a stronghold gel to lock your curl shape in while drying
• Fix your diffusing: hovering alone usually won’t enhance your curl pattern enough. Scrunch diffuse and dry fully so the curl shape can set

Do these consistently for a few wash days before deciding your curls are “gone.”

That’s how you figure out whether your hair just needs the right routine… or whether something deeper is influencing your curl pattern.
