Have you ever been so confused by all the types of curly hair products and what order they are supposed to go in? For today’s video, as part of the Curly Haircare for Beginners playlist, I’m taking you through my wash day routine, step-by-step. We’re discussing which products are best to use when, and why.

If you follow a different method or have a different order of products, please let me know! Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way, and everyone as their preference. I am just sharing what works best for my 3a/3b fine curly hair.

How to Apply Curly Hair Products in the Right Order

Step 1: Detangle with conditioner. This is optional, but I prefer to get the tangles our before going in with shampoo and roughing up my hair. This helps prevent breakage and removes loose hairs for a better scalp cleanse.

Step 2: Cleanse. Shampoo with your favorite shampoo or cleansing conditioner.

Step 3: Deep condition. Also optional, but I prefer to deep condition for 20-30 min 1x per week. I use a deep conditioner in place of my final conditioner. If you’re not deep conditioning, apply a bit more of your regular conditioner to your ends to detangle once more.

Step 4: Prep/Leave-In. Apply a leave-in conditioner or styling prep/primer. Another optional step, but using a leave-in will help with dry hair.

Step 5: Define. Use a curl cream to define your curls and help moisturize further.

Step 6: Seal. Finish off with a gel or a mousse to lock in that moisture, prevent frizz, and create long-lasting hold that will get you through your next wash.
