How to Get Volume for Low Density Curls

How to Get Volume for Low-Density Hair | Root Lift & Scalp Covering Tips

If you have low-density or thin curly hair like me, you likely struggle with achieving volume at the root and overall fullness. In this video, I’m going to walk you through step-by-step how to style your curls for more volume.

I’m also teaming up with Curlsmith because they just launched the new Full Body Thickening Lotion as part of their scalp recipe. It’s designed to create volume that lasts 24 hours, without stickiness.

Styling Routine for Volume

  1. Ensure your hair is free of buildup by clarifying. I used the Curlsmith Detox Kit.
  2. Use a lightweight deep conditioner. Ensure it’s fully rinsed out.
  3. Apply leave-in conditioner like the Weightless Air Dry Cream. Apply products to damp hair versus soaking wet, and apply water as you go when needed. Style upright instead of upside down for more control over hair placement and scalp covering.
  4. Apply the Full Body Thickening Lotion and comb through evenly.
  5. Section hair and thoroughly apply a lightweight, liquidy gel such as the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly
  6. Style using a brush, upright. Avoid creating too thick of curl clumps to maintain fullness. Separate ringlets as needed with a comb or fingers. Brush the hair at the crown up and back to cover the scalp at the crown. Use the brush edge to create a bend right at the root which will enhance root volume. Use a hair towel to microplop, scrunching out excess water. Glaze on additional gel as needed.
  7. Diffuse instead of air drying to create the most volume. Use the prongs of the diffuser to lift the hair at the root and hold. Place root clips along the top section for added volume as your hair finishes drying.
  8. Once hair is 100% dry, fluff the roots and scrunch out some of the gel cast. Gently separate any thick curl clumps from the bottom up.

Final Results

I was shocked at the amount of volume that I had! I could see more fullness throughout my hair while retaining definition. The roots also were lifted and the root clips helped. I have tried this same routine using the root clips but without the thickening lotion, and I didn’t have as much lasting volume throughout the day. I definitely think the thickening lotion helped to keep the root volume.

I enjoyed how my hair has a clean feeling to it still and didn’t have a textured, sticky feeling like other volumizing products or texturizing sprays.

Day 2 Results

When I woke up my curls were still in good shape. I did some light refreshing to redefine some curls. I still had great volume, even at the roots.
