My Nighttime Curl Routine: Refresh, Repair & Protect While You Sleep

Are you constantly waking up with your curls looking a mess? With the right nighttime routine, you can refresh and protect your curls while you sleep.

I am using the new Overnight Repair Serum from Innersense, who is kindly partnering with me for this post.

What Is Already in My Hair From Wash Day

First, let me show you what day I am on and what is already in my hair, because that changes the results you get from a refresh.

It is the end of day three. I have not done a full refresh, just a touch of water yesterday and again this morning, because my hair has lasted well.

My wash day stylers:

Innersense Air Dry Styling Cream: One of my favorite curl creams because it has hold in it, not just moisture.

Innersense I Create Curl Memory: A strong hold gel that works well for my in the fall and winter months.

The Nighttime Minimal Refresh Routine

A nighttime refresh helps most if you have no time in the morning. It is probably the same amount of time as a morning refresh, just moved to bedtime, and you get the added benefit of repairing and preventing damage while you sleep.

I am using my Minimal Refresh Method, which means doing less. You start small, then stop and assess before doing more.

That keeps you from over refreshing. Have you ever refreshed your hair and it looked worse when you were done? This prevents that, and it stops you from grabbing water or product the second you look at your curls.

Step 1: Assess Your Curls Before You Add Water or Product

You have to read what your hair needs instead of picking something up blindly. Here is what I saw:

  • Curl clumps and definition still intact, with a little cast left from wash day
  • Normal halo frizz from humidity, which is expected on day three
  • A few large clumps to separate and some shape to arrange
  • Frizzy ends, which are always a problem area for me

That tells me to do a Level 1 dry refresh with my hands only, then a Level 3 product refresh for my ends.

I am skipping Level 2, the water refresh. You could do it, but you would have to diffuse or air dry fully first. You do not want to sleep in wet hair.

Step 2: Dry Refresh to Organize Your Curls Without Water or Product

Hands only, no water, no product:

  1. Fluff your roots. Adds volume and unsticks the hair from your scalp so you can see what you are working with. Skip it if you need to.
  2. Separate large curl clumps. Curls loop around each other all day and stick together. Pretty, but they make hair look sparse and leave gaps where the light shows through.
  3. Tuck in the frizz. Comb it down with your fingertips, then press it back into the hair while lifting so you do not flatten it. Use your hand almost like a claw at the roots, where you get the most fly aways after fluffing.
  4. Wind frizz back into a clump. Curl clumps hide frizz well.
  5. Stop and assess again. Look and feel before adding anything.

After my dry refresh, my halo frizz was tamed and my shape looked more even. My ends still felt a little brittle and still had frizz. That is worth fixing, because getting my cast back protects my curls overnight, and by morning it has broken on its own into softer curls without the frizz.

One thing to understand about ends that feel crispy: that is usually a lack of hold, not actual dryness. Ends lose hold because product dissipates over the days, because the ends are thinner and need a trim, or because they got overdiffused on wash day and look frayed.

Most people reach for an oil here. I find oils overly soften the hair and can make frizz worse, because they are not bringing the definition back together. Water would reactivate your cast, but it needs drying time and it starts to reset and elongate the curl.

I want softness and tamed frizz, so I am using the Overnight Repair Serum instead of an oil, water, or more gel.

Step 3: Product Refresh With the Innersense Overnight Repair Serum

Bonus tip: this is not only a nighttime product. You can use it at the end of wash day to break your cast the way you would with an oil, without as much frizz.

What Innersense claims it does:

  • Repairs hair bonds back to their original state and helps prevent future damage through dual action repair at the cuticle and the cortex
  • Locks in moisture for healthier feeling, shinier hair
  • Awakens the olfactory senses to create a calming experience
  • Clinical claims: 2.3x stronger hair after just one use, and 96% of split ends sealed after just one use

Keep in mind split ends are only temporarily sealed. The only true fix is a haircut. But this can improve the appearance of split ends, frizz, and ends lacking hold.

It has a lavender type scent and smells so good. The texture is lightweight and slippery, creamy but not as thick as a curl cream, more like a leave in or serum. It is not sticky, and I can barely feel it on my hands once it dries.

How I apply it, in two passes:

1. The quick method, to hit all the ends. Put some in your palms, then glaze it over the surface of your hair one side at a time. Pick up the whole section, press the frizz in, and work downward onto the ends. You want the product on all your strands, because that is what the repairing benefit needs, with extra focus on your damaged areas. Mine are the front corners. This alone is the fastest way to refresh, and it covered most of my ends.

2. The curl by curl method, to redefine individual frizzy curls. Optional, if you want to take it further. Pick out the curls that look frizzier than the rest, isolate the frizz out of the clump, then run a little product from your fingertips down the strand. Do not overdo the amount on this pass.

Keep the motion downward. Do not scrunch, grab at, or rough the hair upward. That creates frizz. You are smoothing the hair and squishing it back into its clumps.

In the video, you can see the difference between the side I did and the side I had not touched yet. The ends look less frizzy and the cast comes right back, because this reactivates the gel already in your hair. Water is the first ingredient, but not enough to make your hair feel wet.

My results before bed: two minutes, if that. It looks wet but does not feel damp at all, and it dries right away. I just have my cast back.

Do not mistake that crunchy cast feeling for dryness. It is a protective shell. Leave it overnight and break it in the morning, with a little more serum if you want.

The goal is not frizz free hair. I am not refreshing every curl. I am getting my cast back so my hair has a better starting point instead of looking rough before bed and worse by morning.

Step 4: Protect Your Curls Overnight So the Refresh Lasts

Do not sleep on a regular cotton pillowcase. It is not slippery, so it rubs the hair, creates frizz and friction, and can cause damage over time. Sleeping with your hair down means tangles and a major refresh the next day, which is a big reason people do not get lasting results.

Silk and satin are softer and slipperier, so they glide against the curls instead of roughing them up. Your options:

If your hair is long, getting it up off the nape of your neck matters most, since rubbing against your neck on a pillow creates tangles. If your hair is short, you may not need a bonnet at all.

You can also think of the serum as a second layer of overnight protection, like using an overnight oil without the greasiness.

Curls always get messed up overnight, and perfectly preserved is not the goal. The healthier your hair is, the longer your results last, because healthy hair holds moisture and is less sensitive to frizz and tangles. That is why I recommend bond building treatments, and do not skip your trims.

Morning Results: How My Curls Held Up Overnight

My hair held up really well. This is day four or five, and I would normally wash today but I do not feel like I have to.

A lot of that longevity is the I Create Curl Memory Gel giving me hold. What I was checking was where I applied the serum: did it frizz up or break down my hold? It did not. Everything softened the way it naturally does overnight, and I still have definition throughout.

As long as a couple of curls are still defined, the whole head looks better and looks less like wash day. I could stretch this another day with a headband. The serum let me go an extra day, made my ends feel a lot better, and got my bond building in overnight.

Do You Need a Bond Building Treatment in Your Routine?

We all do things daily that damage our hair: brushing, detangling, shampooing, styling, diffusing, going outside, being in the sun. When clients tell me they color or highlight their hair, I always make sure they have a bond building treatment in their routine.

Most traditional bond builders go on wet hair, have to sit, and sometimes need shampooing out. They are excellent at repairing, but that is a lot of steps and a lot of getting in and out of the shower.

Who this serum fits:

  • Easy maintenance, like me. Normal wear and tear, not a lot of damage, and you want something simple.
  • Severe damage. You still need a traditional treatment, or something like the Innersense Repair Mask that you leave on longer. You can use this alongside it for everyday repair.

I love a multipurpose product that is easy to use, but that does not make it right for everyone. You might prefer a traditional mask you leave on, especially with severe damage.

For the serum, Innersense’s FAQ says it is gentle enough to use nightly or consistently. I use it a couple of times a week. I have also used it in the morning, and with a little water when curls have stretched out and need reshaping. Sometimes I use it just for slip on my hands when a texturized gel makes refreshing hard. It works better for that than a leave in, curl cream, or oil, which tends to make frizz worse.

Still Not Getting Lasting Results?

Try the nighttime touch up with whatever products you already have, or just water. Make sure your hair is dry before bed.
