How to Tame Wet Frizz

How to Tame Wet Frizz | UPDATED 2022

If you’re currently experiencing wet frizz, I feel your pain. In this video, I walk you through a simplified step-by-step routine to reduce wet frizz.

It’s important to note that it’s normal to have some frizz and we cannot completely eliminate it. This routine aims to reduce tangles and breakage, strengthen, and moisturize the hair so wet frizz is less apparent.

You also do not have to do every step mentioned in this routine. I wanted to share various things you can try if you’re struggling with wet frizz, but if you don’t have damaged hair you can skip some of these.

Wash Day Routine for Wet Frizz

  1. OPTIONAL: Wet hair and apply a pre-shampoo detangler to prevent matting, knots, and breakage while shampooing.
  2. Shampoo with a chelating shampoo to remove hard water residue and product buildup that can prevent products from absorbing leading to wet frizz. The Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenence Shampoo also contains bond-repairing ingredients to strengthen damaged hair and prevent breakage. Damaged hair is one of the biggest causes of wet frizz due to the raised cuticle (high-porosity).
  3. Deep condition with a protein-free deep conditioner such as the AG Nourish Mask. Comb the deep conditioner through to ensure every hair is coated. Let it sit for 5-20 minutes before rinsing. Wrap hair loosely in a hair towel.
  4. OPTIONAL: Spritz clean hair with water to ensure it’s evenly wet. Apply a primer such as the Olaplex No. 9 to protect the hair from heat, static, and tangles. This also strengthens damaged hair and will smooth the cuticle.
  5. Apply a curl cream for moisture. Dry hair will result in wet frizz, so it’s essential to moisturize first before your gel.
  6. Apply a medium to strong hold gel such as the Curlsmith Soufflé thoroughly in sections. In my experience, light-hold gels always result in wet frizz.
  7. Use a brush to smooth curl clumps and define the curls. Wet frizz is often from hairs that tangle within the curl clumps.
  8. Scrunch with a wet plastic hair cap over your palm to prevent frizz while scrunching. You can also try using a damp spot of your hair towel to scrunch without causing frizz.
  9. Diffuse until hair is completely dry, then scrunch out any unwanted crunch. In my experience, air-drying results in more frizz during the drying process.
