24-hour frizz protection without refreshing? I’ll take it! Today, I’m sharing how to make your curls last longer after wash day without frizz so you can do less refreshing. Included are all my best tips for achieving more hold, including how to use hairspray for curly hair.

I’m so excited to share that Curlsmith is launching two new hairsprays as part of its Moisture Recipe, one that is flexible hold and one that is strong hold. I put the flexible hold one to the test to see if it could keep my frizzy flyaways and root frizz tamed for 24 hours.

Wash Day Steps

Step 1

Ensure your hair is free of buildup and moisturized.

Purpose: Buildup from products can prevent your styling products from absorbing and leading to frizz.

Product: Shampoo that is labeled as clarifying or detoxing + conditioner or deep conditioner.

Step 2

Use styling products that have good slip, are lightweight and can be reactivated with water.

Purpose: This makes refreshing easier and prevents a product-y feeling and tangles.

Product: Leave-in and/or curl cream and a lightweight gel

Step 3

Style for longevity by using techniques such as brush styling or finger coiling that enhance curl definition.

Purpose: The more definition you have on wash day, the longer it will last.

Product: Brush (optional)

Step 4

Diffuse to set your gel cast. Avoid air drying in humidity and avoid touching your hair too much.

Purpose: The quicker you set your gel cast, the less frizz will form.

Product: Diffuser

Step 5

Seal in your style with a hairspray for maximum hold.

Purpose: Hairspray adds extra hold for more frizz protection and will help humidity-proof your curls.

Product: Hairspray

Day 2 Results

After washing my hair, I took a bath that night and protected my curls in a shower cap. The next morning, I did a sweaty cycling workout and wore my hair in a bonnet, then showered with a shower cap. I skipped refreshing because I didn’t feel that my curls needed it. They were still clumped and defined and had a softer look to them which helped my hair look full overall. I had just a small amount of normal frizz but didn’t have any flyaways on top since I sprayed the hairspray there. My hair didn’t feel dry either which was nice.

Refreshing may not be needed for some hair types, and I usually will need to refresh by day 3. Avoid saturating the hair every day with water and avoid layering on more product with each refresh.

Products and moisture can evaporate over time, especially for those with high-porosity hair. On refresh days, add a little water to reactivate your gel or add more if needed. Seal with a hairspray for added hold or with an oil for shine.

Overall, I was impressed with how well my hair held up. In fact, I think it looked even better on day 2 because it was soft and full but didn’t have frizz.

I’ve shared this chart in the past, but it illustrates the factors that contribute to how long your curls last. With these factors combined, you can achieve curls that hold up in between wash days, saving you time.
