Do your curls fall straight by the end of the day or by day 2? Let’s dive into the 5 reasons curls fall flat and how to make your curls last longer.

Special thanks to Curlsmith for partnering with me for this video. Curlsmith currently has BOGO half-off jumbo and full-sized products now until February 15, 2023.

5 Reasons Curls Fall Flat

  1. Problem: Using too much water when styling
Solution: Towel-dry curls after washing, damp style and add water as needed

BONUS TIP: Add Curlsmith Volume Lotion for volume
  2. Problem: Too much moisture
    1. Problem: Using too heavy products with thick formulas or a lot of oils & butters
Solution: Use lightweight cream options such as Weightless Air Dry Cream, Feather-Light Protein Cream, or Shine Cream
    2. Problem: Using too much cream, softening your gel’s hold too much
      Solution:
-Use only what your hair needs
      -Emulsify to spread it around
-Focus it on dry areas like the ends
      -Add more water
  3. Problem: Not using enough hold
Solution: Use a strong hold gel such as Curlsmith Souffle, In-Shower Style Fixer, or Shine Gel

If you’re not getting a cast, use more gel and less cream and water. If you don’t like the look of strong hold gels, use a light hold gel like the Shape Up Aqua Gel, and then just add a light glaze of strong hold on top.

BONUS TIP: Brush style for longer-lasting curls
  4. Problem: Not diffusing and air drying instead
Solution: Diffuse to “set” the curl pattern and the gel cast
  5. Problem: Not protecting curls overnight
Solution: Sleep with a bonnet and a satin or silk pillowcase. Avoid pineapples as they stretch the curls out.

Finish with an oil to lock in moisture such as the Curlsmith Bonding Oil.

Remember that loose curls and waves are going to fall. It’s normal and natural, so there’s only so much you can do. Damaged hair will also not last as long because it cannot hold onto moisture. However, it gets better in time as hair health improves.

Day 2 Results

I love my results on next-day hair with this Curlsmith combo. The Shine Gel gives a “grit” to the hair that really helps with volume. It requires minimal refreshing on day 2 and can be reactivated with just water. My curls still held up and did not fall limp.

  1. Hi Genna, this video was very useful. Thank you!!!
Can you please explain the type of product the thickening lotion is? It makes the role of a “leave in”? I like your basic easy routines: leave in, gel. brush styling, diffuser and oil.

    Happy Valentines Day 🙂
