VIDEO: Winter Beauty Hacks – Home Remedies for Dry Skin & Hair

Winter is one of the driest times of the year, and it can be hard on our skin and hair. I’ve put together 4 beauty hacks to combat chapped lips, frizzy, dull hair, and dry skin under foundation. These all use simple and cheap ingredients that you can easily do at home.

Coconut oil is one of the most effective oils you can use on your hair and body. It can be used in so many different ways, and is especially great for damaged hair and split ends. My naturally curly hair is normally very dry, and can be unmanageable in the winter. When combined with an apple cider vinegar rinse, this treatment will leave your hair shiny, soft, and frizz-free. Here’s how to do it:

  • Melt organic coconut oil jar in hot water
  • Cover hair evenly with it in sections
  • Wrap hair in a hot towel or cotton t-shirt and let sit for at least 20 minutes
  • Rinse hair in the shower with organic apple cider vinegar
  • Shampoo & condition after if needed

If you struggle with dry skin on your face, it can look flaky and uneven under your foundation. By reversing your normal nighttime and morning skincare products, you can remove dead skin so foundation goes on smoothly. Use a scrub, like the e.l.f. Exfoliating Scrub and buff over dry skin and rinse.

I typically use thick moisturizers and serums at night, but when my skin is really dry I will mix the Paula’s Choice Resist C-15 Super Booster with my daytime moisturizer, Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Hydrating Fluid. This will help hydrate your skin and prep for an even foundation application.

Dry, cracked lips are never fun in the winter. This simple scrub will exfoliate and plump your lips so lipsticks go on smoother and flake-free.

  • Melt organic coconut oil partially
  • Mix with regular or cane sugar
  • Using a toothbrush or fingers, buff over lips
  • Wipe away, and apply plain coconut oil, Vasaline, or a lip balm

Prevent skin and hair from becoming dry again is tough, but I recommend sleeping with a humidifier running. This one from Honeywell is affordable and helps me sleep better. With the heat running in the house, this is essential to add moisture back into the air. I notice a difference when I wake up, and it helps with having a dry throat, especially if you have a cold or are sick!
