How to Scrunch without Frizz + Tips for Wet Frizz

Everyone battles frizz with naturally curly hair, and sometimes it’s inevitable. However a lot of the frizz can be controlled when your hair is still wet, and when you’re applying your styling products. Today, I’m sharing some tips and techniques for when you’re scrunching your curls, so that you can still get great definition but not cause frizz.

Tips for Scrunching

  • Apply your stylers to wet or damp hair. I used leave-in, cream, and gel.
  • With wet hands and some product on your hands, gently scrunch from the ends up to the root
  • For more curl definition at the root, hold your roots up with your opposite hand as you scrunch
  • To prevent breakage and frizz, avoid squeezing your hair. Instead, leave your palms open and gently press upward
  • To absorb excess water and reduce your drying time, scrunch using these same techniques while holding a flat-weave cotton hair towel or a cotton T-shirt
  • Flip head upside down for more volume at the root, and gently press upwards with open palms
  • If you have any frizzy areas remaining, add water to your hands and some additional gel or mousse and smooth over them
  • Diffuse by hovering the dryer, or air dry
  • Wait until hair is 100% dry before fluffing the roots and scrunching out the crunch with dry hands or oil/serum

  1. My hair is more on the wavy side, but the underneath part is super curly. I usually blow the whole thing dry with a round brush but it takes FOREVER! I do the curly girl thing off and on and can get it pretty curly. My problem though is that when I diffuse my hair it seems to lose some of the curl, especially on the top. I do have highlights, but really condition them. It takes so long to let it air dry enough to scrunch. Any suggestions? Diffusing just doesn’t seem to work for me…..maybe I’m just doing it wrong?

    1. Hi Kelly!
Have you tried scrunching out some of the excess water first with a t-short before diffusing? That always cuts down on the drying time for me. Then I apply a second light layer of product to tame frizz that formed from scrunching.
Have you seen my video on how I diffuse upside down while plopping? That may help get your more definition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLfGNv-tLBA&list=PLcFghU1dAGrq5QdJZqxWxuZc7uoqBRK3y&index=24&t=50s

      Hope that helps!
