How to Manage Coarse Curly Hair | Brittle, Dry, Tangly, & Uneven Curls

Do your curls feel brittle, tangly, and are frizzy, and unruly? You may have coarse hair. Even if you know you don’t have coarse hair, this post will still be helpful for you if you struggle with brittle, tangly, and frizzy hair.

There is not enough content and resources out there for coarse curly hair, and you mostly see curly creators discussing fine curly hair. Although I share tons of tips for my fine hair curlfriends all the time, I wanted to provide a full breakdown of how to manage coarse curly hair. My hair is one of those anomalies where it is 50% medium texture and 50% coarse texture, and it’s low density. A very strange combo, I know. This can make it challenging because I need lots of moisture and slip, but I don’t want to weigh down my hair since I need volume with it being low-density.

For this wash day routine, I’m using products that are high moisturizing but won’t weigh down your hair. The perfect combo for winter! This routine will also work if you have fine curly hair and also struggle with dryness, brittle hair, and tangles.

Let’s first cover the basics of coarse hair.

What is Coarse Hair?

  • Individual hair strands are thick in diameter
    • Not to be confused with “thick” as in high-density hair aka having lots of hair on your head.
  • Coarse hair is one of the only hair textures that contains the medulla, the innermost layer of the hair.
  • Often feels brittle and wirey and are easy to see
  • Often have kinks, which are spots on the hair strand that change direction, flatten out, or bend
  • Contains more surface area, which can withstand more amounts of product
  • May be stronger because of thickness of the strand, however due to the dry nature of coarse hair it’s actually prone to breakage and lacks elasticity.
  • Common to have random coarse areas, especially around the crown.
    • Outer layer of the hair is more prone to moisture loss
    • More exposed to the sun & environment
    • Wearing hair up in ponytails and “pineapple” hairstyles

Causes of Coarse Hair

  • Genetics
  • Aging – gray is more coarse
  • Hormone imbalances or changes in hormones such as during pregnancy
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Nutrient deficiencies: Iron/Ferritin, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D or any minerals like zinc & magnesium
  • Certain prescription drugs
  • Over-exposer to the sun and harsh environmental factors

Problems with Coarse Hair & Solutions

  • Coarse hair feels rough to the touch, leading to more tangles
    • Use products that soften the hair and provide slip
    • Use pre-poo oils to help dry detangle
    • Use conditioner first to avoid having a matted mess when shampooing
  • Buildup can be noticeable on coarse hair
    • Incorporate clarifying
    • Use protein with caution. Coarse hair has enough protein. Too much protein can buildup on the hair and make it feel even more brittle.
  • Coarse hair is drier
    • Use moisturizing leave-ins, creams, or butters under your gel or mousse
    • Deep condition weekly or bi-weekly
    • If you only have a certain area that’s coarse, focus more moisturizing products there
    • Avoid drying alcohols
    • Avoid products that are very texturizing, like volume sprays, foams, hairspray
    • Very drying, strong hold products with heavy ingredients will make it feel worse
  • Coarse hair is very tangly and breaks easily
    • Avoid upside down styling
    • Use slippery, thin strong hold gels
    • Comb products through
    • Avoid over-manipulating curls with excessive scrunching and too much tension in your styling brush.
  • Coarse hair often contains kinks, making the curl pattern uneven, resistant to uniform clumps, and frizzy. Kinks also lead to single strand knots, which require trimming.
    • Using a brush to style and create more uniform clumps
    • Group unruly hairs into ringlets to blend them
  • Coarse hair will dry out easily and appear dull
    • Use a sealing oil as a finisher
    • Refresh to restore moisture & shine

  2. Hi! Really liked this video. I have course and thick hair. If you use a moisturizing curl cream do you recommend still using a leave in conditioner? I currently do not use a leave in conditioner as I don’t like the feel of it left in my hair and I am wondering if that is why my hair tends to look dry around day 3. Any suggestions? Also, I am going thru menopause which I am wondering affects my hair. Although I have always had course hair since I was a kid. Thanks!

  7. I have been watching all of your videos, they are very informative and helpful. However, I’ve been trying to narrow down products that would be beneficial to my specific hair issues/concerns. I have naturally curly hair, I would say a cross between 2c to 3c-now, depending on which part of my head you are looking at. It used to be more 3b-3c, but it has become so dry, brittle and broken and extreme shedding in the past 7 months that it’s just heartbreaking. I don’t even know what products to use because everyone has so many different opinions and so many different options and choices-it’s so overwhelming and I can’t just buy everything and I don’t know which “recipe” or combination will be the right solution. Right now, even if I get just ok looking curls from the mid-section down (and that’s pretty much day one-forget day two or more), from the root to mid-section there is so much breakage-it’s just nothing but “frizz”, nothing is smooth at the crown. I have very, very long hair. It used to be very, very thick-dense and course. Now it’s losing density, but seems like it’s becoming even courser, if that’s even possible? Where do I even begin????

While there is no right or wrong way to do your curls, try these alternative techniques if you struggle with sectioning and brush styling. ❌ Not brushing through your hair before sectioning and it not being wet enough. ✅ Ensure your hair is evenly wet and brush through. You can apply leave-in or cream first. 👉🏼Why? It will be difficult to create clean sections lines with tangles in the way. ❌ Leaving the hair stuck to your head after brushing. ✅ Run your fingers through your hair, lifting the hair away from the scalp. 👉🏼Why? This creates space at the root so your fingers can get below the hair to create clean lines. ❌ Not creating clean lines. ✅ Create clean section lines by placing 2 fingers around your hairline and gliding back until they meet, continually pressing down on the scalp and remaining under the hair. Meet your fingers in the back, grab the above section, and split apart the hair. 👉🏼Why? If you don't have a clean line you will likely accidentally snag the other section while styling. ❌ Not securing the hair above upwards and letting it droop down over the line. ✅ Comb the above section up and secure it snug with a claw clip. Avoid duckbill clips and anything that is too loose. 👉🏼Why? If the top section is falling over the section line, you're likely to snag it when styling. ❌ Not securing back your sections after styling them. ✅ Clip away the finished sections with another claw clip. 👉🏼Why? This prevents you from accidentally picking up hairs that have already been styled and mixing them in. ⭐️️BONUS TIP⭐️ ❌ Grabbing sections that are too large or too small in your brush when brush styling. ✅ Ensure your section is not wider than your brush. Ensure it's not too small to where there is no tension to grab the hair. 👉🏼Why? If it's too large it will fall out, tangle up, or not properly clump the curls.
