How to Fix a Flat Crown when Refreshing & Cover the Scalp

Do you ever wake up with a flattened crown area, with exposed scalp and no volume? This can be fixed with refreshing and specific styling techniques. For today’s video, I’m going to walk you through some of the common causes of a flattened crown, and how to fix it when refreshing. I’ve also included tips for detangling when refreshing and re-defining curls.

I wanted to preface by saying it’s completely normal for your hair to want to separate or become flat in the crown area, especially if you have low-density hair. Density hair refers to the overall number of hairs on your head, and low-density hair often struggles to be voluminous and can expose the scalp.

Having an exposed crown or a cowlick is not something you have to “fix,” however if you are looking for tips to cover the scalp and achieve volume, hopefully this helps.

How to Fix a Flat Crown When Refreshing

  1. Start by fluffing the roots after taking your hair out of your bonnet or pineapple. Shake out the crown area and position the crown area. Leave it as is if you don’t need to refresh.
  2. Use a refreshing foam on the scalp if needed or skip it.
  3. Avoid soaking your whole head down if possible. Spritz when a flairosol spray bottle or lightly wet with your hands. Add some cream, leave-in conditioner, or gel to your hands and wet them.
  4. Smooth over hair. Pick up frizzy curls and smooth them individually, removing loose hairs and gently separating any knots. Finger coil any limp curs or redefine with a brush (must wet the hair more before using a brush).
  5. If you need to restyle the crown, spritz it directly with water at the root. Pick up a horizontal or round-shaped section around the crown and use fingers or a brush to smooth it upwards and back. If using a brush, place the edge right at the root, turn it to apply tension, and glide up and back.
  6. Scrunch right at the roots encourage curls. Avoid over clumping to prevent separation at the scalp, exposing the scalp. Scrunch with a hair towel if needed to absorb excess water.
  7. Diffuse using a diffuser attachment that has long prongs that extend past the bowl. Place the prongs right at the root to lift it up. Hold until it dries.
  8. Fluff roots from the underside with dry hands once the hair is 100% dry
