How to make curls look fuller

How to Make Curls Look Fuller & Less See-Through | Thin Curly Hair Routine

If you have low-density or thin curly hair like me, you know the struggle where your curls appear sparse and almost transparent/see-through. My past few wash days have left me feeling down about my thinning hair and how sparse it looks, so I wanted to try a new wash day routine where I focus on fullness. This involves using lighter hold products and less brush styling to achieve more fullness within the inner layers.

Wash Day Routine

  1. Start with a pre-poo oil to detangle and remove loose hairs. This will also help protect fragile hair during the shampoo process.
  2. Clarify to remove buildup. Clarifying is like hitting the reset button on your curls and I always recommend it anytime you’re struggling with your curls.
  3. Deep condition to restore moisture. This is especially important in the winter when hair becomes drier. Rinse thoroughly and wrap hair in a hair towel to absorb excess water at the roots.
  4. Spritz the lengths of hair and apply a thickening lotion. This is optional but can really boost volume.
  5. Section hair and apply a curl cream that has a little bit of hold. Evenly distribute it with a brush.
  6. If needed, use a flexible brush to create a slight curl enhancement without over-clumping the curls. A brush can also be used at the crown to lift the hair at the root up and back. This will help with scalp covering.
  7. Scrunch in a medium or light hold gel and continue the process through each section. I recommend larger sections for more volume and less precision. Gently shake out the roots from underneath to avoid the lines from sections showing.
  8. After styling, scrunch with a hair towel to absorb excess water and product. If frizz forms, glaze in another light layer of gel mixed with water.
  9. Diffuse until curls are about 95% dry. Add root clips along your part and crown. Finish air drying to diffuse until 100% dry.
  10. Fluff the roots and scrunch out the gel cast with a little oil on your hands.
