Fast Brush Styling Technique

How to Brush Style Faster + Low-density Tips

If you love the effect of brush styling but just cannot be bothered with having to brush coil every single hair, then you’ll definitely want to learn this fast brush styling technique. I’m also going to be sharing some tips for low-density hair and how to achieve both definition and volume.

For this routine, I’m testing out a gel that’s new to me, Jessicurl Spiralicious. Watch the video above to hear my first impression thoughts.

Fast Brush Styling Routine:

  1. Start with clean, damp hair. Spritz water if needed. Apply a curl cream and brush through.
  2. Section half your hair. Apply gel to the lower section.
  3. Grab a large section and brush your hair up and back while applying tension.
  4. OPTIONAL: Brush through the clumps with a wide tooth comb to separate any really large curl clumps and create more volume. Scrunch to encourage ringlets.
  5. Clip the lower section away and split the top section in half. Apply gel.
  6. Pick up a horizontal section and brush the full crown section up and back. Use the comb to separate the clumps if desired then scrunch.
  7. Continue the same process to the front. You may need to pick up vertical or diagonal sections in the front. More precise brush styling in the front around baby hairs and grays may be needed.
  8. Lift hair off the scalp and gently shake out the roots so the sections don’t show. Check to ensure the crown is covered and brush gently over any cowlicks if needed.
  9. OPTIONAL: Microplop by scrunching with a damp hair towel to absorb excess water. Glaze a light layer of gel + water on frizzy areas.
  10. Diffuse until dry.
  11. OPTIONAL: Apply root clips when your hair is dried but still warm. Let it sit for at least 10 min.
  12. Fluff out the roots and scrunch out the crunch.

Final Results

With brush styling, the curls are more defined therefore less frizzy and less stringy. With the techniques shared above for separating curl clumps, you can achieve both volume and definition. If you have thicker hair or do not wish to increase volume, you can keep the clumps intact. The Jessicurl gel gave me strong hold and was easy to scrunch out for a softer look.

Day 2

Day 2 Results

Brush styling results in longer-lasting curls because the curls are less stringy and hold their shape. I didn’t really need to do any refreshing on day 2 and just touched up some flyaways with water. My underside also became a little stringy, mainly because I’m due for a haircut.

I was very pleased with the results of the Jessicurl gel. My day 2 was great and didn’t require much refreshing. By day 3-4 my curls were definitely dry though, so I think refreshing with cream is needed with this gel since it’s glycerin-free.
