Drugstore Curly Hair Routine + Q&A

Definition + Root Volume, Ringlets that Last | Drugstore Routine Q&A

Today I’m answering your questions about root volume, achieving definition and volume, curls that fall straight, hair loss update, and more as I style my hair using some new drugstore products. For this drugstore curly hair routine, I use just one, single styling product.

Q&A

Q: “I am using the full Ouidad line for bond repair but my hair turns out soft after styling.”
A: This is a very softening line, so it may not be right for you. Below are some other things you can try.

Solutions:

  • Skip the leave in or curl cream
  • Just use gel or mousse
  • Incorporate gels with grit (usually thick), volumizing foams, or hairspray

Q: “I am struggling with getting the balance between volume, definition, and hold with 2c-3a curls”
A: There are some techniques you can try that I show in the video.

Solutions:

  • Avoid over clumping the curls
  • Separate them while wet
  • Run a wide toothcomb through
  • Finger coil

Q: I use Flora mousse and Ouidad gel but I get lots of flakes.”
A: These two products may not be compatible.

Solutions:

  • Products flake when the formulas are not compatible
  • Also can be caused by buildup, so clarify to remove buildup
  • Try using the Ouidad gel by itself and see if you still have flakes

Q: “Any tips on getting volume at the roots.”
A: There are some techniques you can try that I demonstrate in the video.

Solutions:

  • Diffusing plays the biggest factor
  • The diffuser prongs need to extend past the end of the bowl like in this diffuser
  • Use root clips, especially if you must air-dry

Q: “How is your iron deficiency treatment and hair growth journey going.”
A: Thank you for asking! It has been a really tough journey and I am still struggling. My iron levels are now within the normal range and have been for over a year or two now. My hair was definitely growing in because I see a ton of shorter hairs and my hair is denser at the top compared to the bottom. However, I have not seen an overall improvement in density because I am still shedding excessively. I believe this is due to hormonal birth control, which I am stuck with at this time. I haven’t really been using hair growth treatments consistently because I feel that there are still internal causes fighting against it. I have been using the Curlsmith Elixir around my hairline since I have noticed more thinning there recently.

Q: “I am struggling with hold for curls. Once I break the cast, they fall in a day. How do I keep them intact without the crunch?”
A: There are some techniques you can try that I demonstrate in the video.

Solutions:

  • This is likely because your gel does not have enough hold
  • Use a stronger hold gel
  • Use less cream or leave-in under
  • Add a hairspray
  • Incorporate protein
  • Remember that it’s common with looser curls & waves

Q: “What do you wear on your head when it’s cold outside and you don’t want to mess up your curls.”
A: There are silk and satin-lined head covering options that can help.

Solutions:

Q: “Why do I get terrible knots at the nape of my neck? It only happens when I use gel.”
A: Try using a gel that has more slip to it, and avoid thick sticky gels.

Solutions:

  • Use a gel that has more slip and a thin consistency
  • Get a trim to avoid tangly ends
  • Wear protection as mentioned in the previous answer above
  • Make sure you’re sleeping on silk/satin at night
