I’m sure we can all agree that frizz is the most frustrating thing about curly and wavy hair. We all experience it. While frizz is super common, there are steps you can take to reduce your frizz that I will walk you through in this routine using the new Curlsmith Anti-Frizz Recipe.
Before washing, I like to dry detangle my hair first with a little bit of oil, which helps protect my hair from damage and breakage. This can be done the night before, or at least 5 minutes prior to washing. I like to get the tangles out before I shampoo so it’s easier to wash.
You can also detangle prior to shampooing with conditioner when your hair is wet.
Step-by-Step Curly Hair Routine to Tame Frizz
1. Shampoo
Purpose
Hydrate and remove product residue and oil that can lead to weighed down, frizzy curls
Product
Curlsmith Frizz Control Cleanser
-High lather
-Gentle
-Hydrating
-Color-safe
If your hair is full of wet frizz or has a sticky, weighed-down feeling, it could be product buildup on the hair. I clarify on a regular basis, but I prefer to use a lathering shampoo on regular wash days like this so that I’m still getting a thorough cleanse.
This shampoo is gentle, so it won’t strip the curls of moisture. It contains a blend of oils such as Jojoba seed oil, Watermelon seed oil, and Argan oil which help to replenish the hair’s lipid content.

2. Conditioner
Purpose
Restore moisture and seal the cuticle, preventing dryness that leads to frizz
Product:
Curlsmith Frizz Control Duo Conditioner
-Rinse out or leave in
-Smoothing
-High slip to detangle
-Medium weight
One of the biggest causes of frizz is dryness, so conditioner is essential. Conditioner helps to smooth and condition the cuticle after shampooing. Detangling will also prevent wet frizz and ensure every strand is coated.
This conditioner contains the same blend of oils in this range that help restore the hair’s lipid content, which keeps the curls protected from frizz and moisturized. It’s multi-purpose, so you can leave it in your hair if you want. I prefer to rinse it out so that I can ensure it’s off my scalp, and then I just reapply a bit to my ends.

3A. Moisturizing Styler
Purpose
Moisturize and enhance your curls, sealing the cuticle to prevent frizz
Product 1:
Curlsmith Curl Rescue Curl Retainer
-Jelly styler
-High moisture
-Curl reversion
-Soft-medium hold
For this routine, I layered 2 gels for maximum frizz protection.
The new Curlsmith Curl Retainer is a jelly that is non-sticky and rich in moisture. Its consistency reminds me of a cream gel. It contains the same tri-oil blend as the rest of this line and also has squalane and coconut butter. This combination of oils is supposed to create a light film on the hair, even helping to fight humidity.

Bonus tip:
Use a brush to style or finger coil. This prevents frizz and enhances curl shape, helping retain curls longer.
I also did some brush styling which will reduce frizz by keeping the curls clumped into curl families. This also prevents stringiness and helps the curls last longer.

3B. Strong Hold Styler
Purpose
Provide hold, which prevents frizz from forming and makes your curls last longer
Product 2:
Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer
-Thick gel
-Strong hold
-Anti-humidity
Since the Curl Retainer gives me a soft hold, I added in a light layer of the In-Shower Style Fixer which is a level 9 out of 10 hold. Since it’s very thick, I mix it with water to more easily apply it.
My curls are super prone to frizz and humidity, so this extra layer with give me that crunch I’m looking for. Lack of hold is the most common cause of frizz. If your hair frizzes up after it’s dried or by the end of the day, then that means you didn’t have enough hold in your stylers. Lack of hold can also be from diluting your gel with too much water in your hair, so this is why I style more on the damp side, misting water as I go versus styling soaking, and dripping wet.
- Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer
To prevent frizz, we need stylers to provide a film or a cast on our hair. There are 2 ways that stylers prevent frizz. One is by moisturizing and smoothing the cuticle with sealing oils, which is what the Frizz Control line does. The second way is with natural styling agents such as aloe and flaxseed, or with polymers like polyquaternium or Copolymer. The Fixer gel contains Polyquaternium-69 which provides a strong cast.
This routine combines moisture, cuticle sealing, and hold.
4. Diffuse
Purpose
Set your gel cast to prevent frizz from forming, set your curl shape, and create volume
Product:
Curlsmith Defrizzion Travel Edition + XXL Diffuser
-Designed for fragile curls
-Large diffuser speeds up dry time
-Flat diffuser shape enhances curl shrinkage
Diffusing is also key in preventing frizz. I used the new travel edition of the Curlsmith Defrizzion Hair Dryer but I attached the original XXL diffuser head because I like the large size. The travel edition of the dryer is foldable so it fits easily in my bathroom cabinet.
I hover diffuse at first to set the gel cast and prevent frizz, and then I scrunch or pixie diffuse for more curl shrinkage.
- Curlsmith Defrizzion Dryer & XL Diffuser – Travel Edition
Air drying, especially in humidity can lead to so much frizz. Diffusing gives you more control over how your curls turn out because it sets the curl shape and the cast right away. I also use the diffuser prongs to lift my roots and create volume.
5. Finish
Purpose
Scrunch out any unwanted crunch, add shine, and lock in moisture
Product:
Curlsmith Frizz Rescue Finishing SerumÂ
-Oil-to-gel serum
-Contains oils + moisturizers
-Adds shine
-Softens
Once your hair is 100% dry, you can scrunch out the crunch if you prefer a softer look and feel. However, leaving some of that gel cast in will prevent frizz on next-day hair. If you’re going to be outside for a long period of time in humidity or wind, I recommend leaving the cast in.
To finish, I used the new Curlsmith Frizz Rescue Finishing Serum which is unlike your regular oils. This has an oil-to-gel consistency, and a little goes a long way. Emulsify it in your palms to warm it up, and then glaze over the curls. This contains oils such as olive oil, argan oil, and squalane to soften and seal in moisture. It also contains glycerin and water, making it hydrating too.
Finish with fluffing out the roots to create volume and root lift.

Final Results
My curls are super soft and feel moisturized, with very little frizz. Before, my hair was so dry and frizzy.
It’s important to remember that frizz is totally normal so it’s next to impossible to get rid of it completely, but hopefully, this routine can help reduce it for you.
There are a few follow-up steps to ensure your curls retain their shape and to reduce frizz. Protection post-wash day is key, and everything satin or silk is your best friend. Sleep on a satin pillowcase and wear your hair up in a bonnet or satin scrunchie. This will prevent breakage, tangles, and frizz.
