How to Tame Root Frizz & Flyaways

Root frizz can be one of the most annoying things to try and tame if you have naturally curly hair. Most of us all have it, and it can be inevitable. Today I’m sharing some of the most common causes of frizz at the root, and show you my best tips for reducing it.

I’m also partnering up with Curlsmith for #HotCurlSummer to share some of my best tips for battling the summer humidity, wind, and sun that can wreak havoc on our curls. Root frizz always likes to pop up when the weather is very humid.

What is Root Frizz?

Root frizz is caused by shorter hairs that stand up or poke through from the inner layers of your hair. These short hairs are not long enough to lay flat or group into a curl clump. The tighter your natural curl pattern at the root, the more likely root frizz will show because of the natural bend that curls have, preventing them from laying smoothly.

Causes of Root Frizz

New growth

Our hair is always growing, so as we lose hairs and regrow new ones, it’s inevitable to have shorter hairs all over, and it is a good sign that your hair is growing back properly. Those who are recovering from postpartum hair loss, stress, illnesses, hormonal changes, nutrient deficiencies, and more may notice an excess amount of short hairs.

Breakage

Breakage is the next most common cause of shorter hairs all over that cause root frizz. Breakage typically happens at the end of the hair, but if you’re seeing a lot of breakage at the root it can be from tension in the hair follicle. Root clips, tight hairstyles, and rough detangling can all lead to breakage at the root.

Buildup

If you have a buildup of product, oil, or hard water minerals on your scalp or hair at the roots, this can cause frizz and prevent products from being effective. Clarifying is the best way to remove buildup and should be done on a regular basis, especially if you use products that contain polyquats or silicones, or have hard water in your home. The Curlsmith Detox Kit is one of my favorites for removing product buildup because it cleanses without drying out the hair. 

Lack of moisture

Shampoo raises the pH of our hair so it can cleanse it, which can often leave the roots frizz. Conditioner is designed to lower the pH back down towards its natural level, moisturize and smooth frizz. Applying a bit of conditioner or deep conditioner to your roots will help moisturize the hair, especially if your scalp doesn’t produce much oil naturally. The key is to not apply it to your scalp, rather glaze it over the surface of the hair. The Curlsmith Post-Biotic Calming Conditioner is lightweight and won’t weigh down the roots because it can actually safely get on the scalp.

Not sectioning or evenly apply product

Sectioning your hair when applying your products will ensure there are no dry patches that result in frizz. Neglecting your roots from product will leave the roots frizzy, just like how our hair looks without product. Gel is typically more lightweight than cream, so it won’t weigh down your roots unless you had super fine hair. In that case, use a lightweight, liquid gel. Apply it thoroughly from the ends to the roots.

I went with the Curlsmith Feather-Light Protein Cream and Shine Gel, but I would recommend the Shine Cream instead for more slip. The Shine Jelly is another great option for a lightweight gel. I went with the Shine Gel because it’s strong hold and contains humidity-blocking ingredients.

Not styling your hair & simply scrunching product in

Although just scrunching in some product is quick and easy, it can leave the inner layers of the hair without enough product causing frizz to poke through. Styling refers to using a brush or your fingers to clump the curls which keeps frizz tucked away. More carefully styling the hair will save you time throughout the week because the curls will last longer.

Aggressive scrunching or scrunching with sticky hands

Scrunching is great but can just encourage root frizz to pop back out. Be mindful of your hands being too dry when scrunching because they will stick to your hair. Only touch wet hair with wet hands, and dry hair with dry hands.

Using a plastic shower cap with product to scrunch hair if you struggle with frizz after scrunching. Check out @naturalfrecklesandcurls who shared this tip on Instagram.

You can also scrunch with a hair towel, T-shirt, or satin scarf/pillowcase. If frizz appears, glaze some gel mixed with water on the surface.

Diffusing the roots improperly

I love using a diffuser to create definition, volume, and root lift. However, diffusing the roots can often lead to frizz. Be mindful of the temperature of the dryer and ensure it’s not too hot. Also ensure that your dryer speed is not too high, blowing the hair all over and creating flyaways. Angle the diffuser towards your head instead of pointing it straight up the hair shaft. 

If you end up with root frizz after diffusing, take a little gel or a hairspray diluted with water and glaze over the surface. Tuck away any frizz where possible.

Taming root frizz when refreshing

After refreshing and drying your hair, if you’re left with root frizz, you can use the same technique mentioned previously of glazing gel over the surface of dry hair to tame flyaways. Be sure to fluff from the underside layer to prevent frizz on the surface.

Tame/smooth frizz after scrunching with a little gel diluted with water or hairspray just over the surface.

Low Maintenance Curly Hair Routine | Best Curlsmith Products for Travel
Struggling with flat roots and a lack of volume? Diffuse is key! 1. After applying styling products (gel or mousse is critical for hold), scrunch hair with a hair towel. ⭐️BONUS TIP: For extra hold and to tame frizz, apply another light glaze of gel or mousse after microplopping. 2. Flip hair upside down and plop it over a counter or other flat surface. Hover your diffuser around. No flat surface? Gently cup your hair in sections. This will prevent elongation. Hover the whole time if you want elongation. 3. Flip right side up and cup the ends of your hair in the diffuser and press up towards the head. Angle the diffuser towards your hair versus straight up to prevent frizz. 4. Use the prongs to lift the roots up and hold. Having a diffuser with long enough prongs that extend out past the end of the bowl is key! ⚠️This is why I don't recommend the Dyson because the prongs are not long enough and it gets way too hot. 5. After hair is dry, fluff out the roots and scrunch out the cast with dry hands. ⚠️ You can finish air drying if needed but wait to fluff after it's fully dry! Settings I use are high heat and low fan speed. I alternate to medium heat on the ends sometimes. This diffuser does not get too hot even on high!
